Skill Training
The Bridge
Gabby Douglas vault, London 2012 Olympics
The Bridge is a basic skill that all gymnasts must learn if they wish to progress to more complex skills. Many movements on vault, floor, beam, and even the bars apparatus have skills that are based off of a bridge, such as the picture on the left of a back handspring onto a vault.
The frequency of this skill in gymnastics enhances the importance of back flexibility, which must be established early in an athlete's training to decrease the risk of injury.
